Molybdenum in steel can improve hardenability and thermal strength, prevent temper brittleness, increase remanence and coercivity and corrosion resistance in some media.

In quenched and tempered steel, molybdenum can make parts with larger cross-section deep and harden thoroughly, improve the steel's resistance to tempering or tempering stability, and enable parts to be tempered at higher temperature, so as to more effectively eliminate (or reduce) residual stress and improve plasticity.

In addition to the above effects, Mo can also reduce the tendency of carbides to form continuous network at grain boundaries, reduce the retained austenite in the carburized layer, and relatively increase the wear resistance of the surface layer.

In the forging die steel, molybdenum can also maintain a relatively stable hardness of the steel and increase the deformation. Resistance to cracking and wear, etc.

In the stainless acid resistant steel, molybdenum can further improve the corrosion resistance to organic acids (such as formic acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, etc.), hydrogen peroxide, sulfuric acid, sulfite, sulfate, acid dyes, bleaching powder, etc. In particular, the addition of molybdenum prevents the pitting corrosion caused by the presence of chloride ions. W12Cr4V4Mo high speed steel with about 1% Mo has wear resistance, tempering hardness and red hardness.
